The Grove House

The Grove House is a fantastic community-oriented space for students, staff, and all!

Beyond being a restaurant, the house also hosts a community fridge that anyone can donate to or take from. Up the stairs, you'll also find Darlene the Dresser, a community closet that is completely free for anyone to give or take from as well! The house works closely with both of these mutual-aid efforts and the Student Garden to create a tightly knit and collaborative group within its homey bungalow.

History

In 1976, the house was purchased for $1 and moved to campus. It sat for several years before it was finally restored and opened in February 1980. The complete history of the Grove House is chronicled in this piece by Professor Emeritus Barry Sanders, who was instrumental in bringing this iconic house to campus. [PDF]

How Can We Help?

The student-run Grove House has many kitchen positions including sourcing, baking, cash register work, food prep, barista work, and more. The kitchen is gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian friendly with multiple options for those with dietary restrictions. The Grove House also caters on-campus events, clubs, and meetings.

The bakers at the Grove House learn how to bake the traditional Grove House breads that include Kalamata olive, rosemary garlic, whole grain, ciabatta, banana bread, and more. Other traditional baked goods include cinnamon buns, bagels, muffins, cookies, and more. The bakers can also try out other baked goods and recipes.

Sourcing: The sourcing is student-run and provides great work experience for those interested in restaurant or food management. This position includes the responsibility of taking inventory of the food and supplies and working with local farmers to keep the kitchen stocked with daily produce and supplies.
